Office 2019 Update
To facilitate the goal of providing the campus community with an up-to-date computing environment, the December issue of the Connect IT Newsletter detailed the rollout plan for the latest version of Microsoft Office (2019).
To minimize disruption, and provide everyone the option to update at their convenience, a self-service opportunity was enabled for 3 weeks.
After that, on January 4th, an automated push began to update all campus devices with Office 2019. So far, 837 PC and 62 Mac devices have successfully been updated as well as all labs and classroom computers!
At the same time, we received feedback that for some of you, the automated push created an inconvenience and disruption to your work. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience the update caused. Going forward, to make the process smoother and reduce disruptions for those of you who have not yet updated to Office 2019, we offer the following recommendations.
- If working remotely, save and close any open Office applications before connecting the Cisco AnyConnect VPN. Once you are connected to the VPN the update will begin and may force all Office applications to close. Please do not shut down your machine or disconnect from the VPN during the installation process.
- If on the campus network, when you see the notification alerting you to the update, save your work in all open Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) because they will close to complete the installation.
- Once the installation is complete, you may need to restart your computer.
If you require assistance, please feel free to contact the Help Desk at any time.
The look and feel of the Office applications will remain unchanged, however, Office 2019 provides some exciting new features including a built-in Microsoft language translator as well as new scalable vector graphics to make your documents and presentations stand out! We also recommend this LinkedIn Learning video for a deep dive into Office 2019.
Please note, users of the Webex Meetings Outlook Productivity Tool may need to reinstall it after this upgrade.
Thank you for your patience and feedback during this transition!
