Message from Chancellor Watson on Juneteenth
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater proudly commemorates and celebrates Juneteenth. Juneteenth is the country’s newest federal holiday as it solidifies the significance of the freedom of Black Americans from slavery. Originating in Galveston, Texas, the holiday celebrated on June 19 was the last place to receive the notice of freedom in 1866. We strive to celebrate with all communities that comprise our great Warhawk family. As we pause to honor this legacy that means so much to myself and others, we position ourselves for greater understanding and empathy for all people in our vast nation. I recognize the responsibility of this great institution to continue to spread knowledge in celebration of the rich legacies and history of our nation. Please enjoy the day of commemoration as you reflect, participate in community service, learn about other cultures, and connect with people to strive for a better community.
