Required software updates - MFA with Duo
Outdated software versions on computers present a security risk and make campus vulnerable to cybercriminal attacks that exploit weaknesses. To protect the campus from these attacks, in May ICIT started using Duo in a warning mode to check operating systems, browsers, and applications for updates, prompting an alert upon logging in to an MFA-protected application. Beginning August 29, Duo will transition to a block mode, which means individuals will have two weeks to complete the updates indicated in the notification. After that, Duo will block the use of any out-of-date systems, apps, or browsers until updated.
This date was chosen after careful consideration and consultation with ICIT Governance. This timeframe should provide university employees, particularly 9-month employees, with ample time to address out-of-date software after returning from summer break and still ahead of the start of the fall semester.
See Software Update Notifications from MFA with Duo for guidance on performing updates or contact the Help Desk. Please note: when using campus devices, do not follow the directions given in the Duo prompt on how to perform updates because, unfortunately, ICIT was not able to modify the content of the Duo prompt. Instead, follow the detailed instructions in the link above to use Software Center for Windows PCs or Self-Service for macOS.
This fall, the campus will begin requiring MFA with Duo for more applications, like Canvas and Google Workspace. Look for more details soon in campus-wide emails.
