Communicable disease preparedness and resources

Dear students, faculty and staff,

UW-Whitewater is committed to monitoring communicable diseases and providing pertinent information to the university community. As part of that commitment, the health response preparedness team meets regularly to monitor any ongoing concerns and develop detailed campus response plans. 

The team is led by Kristin Fillhouer, vice chancellor for student affairs, and includes leaders from University Health and Counseling Services, the Dean of Students office, Human Resources, University Housing, Academic Affairs, UW-Whitewater Police, and University Branding and Communications. 

Measles information and checking your vaccination status

We are currently assessing the measles situation in the southwestern corner of the state.

Measles is a highly contagious virus spread through respiratory droplets that can remain in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours. Simply being in the same room with someone who has measles, even if they do not have visible symptoms, is enough to become infected if you have not received the measles vaccine. Fortunately, measles is highly preventable with the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

If you were previously vaccinated but are unsure of whether you need a booster, the Wisconsin DHFS has information to guide you. For more information on the measles in the state, visit the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services measles webpage.

You may be wondering about your own vaccination status. Below are the steps to take to determine if you are up to date and protected.

Students

1. If you were vaccinated in Wisconsin, you can check the Wisconsin Immunization Registry for your vaccination records.

2. If you are from another U.S. state, navigate to your state’s immunization website using this portal.

3. If you are an international student, UHCS is happy to review your vaccination records with you or, if needed, provide a titer test. If you need a vaccination, they are available at local pharmacies in Whitewater. Your insurance will cover the cost of the titer test and the vaccination.

4. You may also contact your primary care provider to obtain your records.

Students who wish to test whether they are protected against measles may request a titer test at UHCS for $55. Major pharmacies such as Walgreens, CVS and Walmart offer MMR vaccinations. 

Students who have questions or concerns about their vaccination status can call UHCS at 262-472-1300 to set up a call with a nurse or sign into their UHCS portal to schedule an appointment. 

Faculty and staff
