"We Are All Purple" forum

Dear Students,

Thank you for your concerned and thoughtful responses to the recent hate crimes on campus. I have been deeply touched by the outpouring of support for the victims and our university family, not only from students, faculty and staff but from members of the local community and state who know these events do not characterize who we are as a University.

Last week, we had very productive meetings with students and faculty and staff to share concerns and discuss strategies for dealing with these events. The importance of coming together to share information and ideas was clearly communicated. A campus-wide “We Are All Purple” forum will be held on Wednesday, December 1st from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in Hyland Hall 1000 (Timmerman Auditorium) to continue this dialogue. Everyone - students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

There is a clear commitment to work together to put a stop to these behaviors. Many have stepped forward, both individually and collectively to address these issues. We launched a new website, [link destination="" text=""We Are All Purple""] to share information and resources related to the recent hate crimes on campus, and news and events regarding the campus community’s response.

At both the student and faculty and staff meetings, the value of having instructors discuss these events in their classes was raised. I have encouraged instructors to initiate these discussions and I have asked the Inclusive Excellence Committee to develop information to be placed on the website as soon as possible to facilitate these discussions.

During this holiday week and even during these stressful times we have much to be thankful for – being a part of this compassionate and creative campus community is a privilege. Thank you for your continuing support of our University family. I look forward to seeing you all at the forum on the 1st.
