2017 Legal Holidays

Please see below for information regarding the upcoming Legal Holidays (Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1), which fall on a Sunday or Monday this year.

a) Full-time employees earn eight hours of paid leave for each legal holiday. Part-time employees earn a prorated amount based on their hours worked during the pay period that includes the legal holiday.

b) Dec. 24 and 31 will be floating legal holiday hours. Offices will be closed Mondays, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

c) An employee may use floating legal holiday hours at any time during the “year” in which the legal holiday occurs. However, if an employee uses floating holiday hours, and terminates prior to the legal holiday being earned, those hours need to be paid back.

d) Floating legal holidays must be used by the end of the “year” in which they are granted.
• University staff – must use on or before Dec. 31 of the calendar year granted.
• Faculty, academic staff, limited – must use on or before June 30 of the end of the fiscal year granted.
• Hours not used by the end of the designated year are lost and cannot be carried into the following year (calendar or fiscal).

Please review your leave balances on your most recent earnings statement. To use the floating legal holiday hours, enter them as you would any other absence request (i.e. sick leave, vacation, etc.); for the “Absence Name,” select Legal Holiday.

Full-time Biweekly Employees: 16 hours of legal holiday are needed for Nov. 23 and Dec. 25. Any additional hours are floating and must be used by Dec. 31, 2017.

Full-time Employees paid Monthly: 40 hours are needed for Nov. 23, Dec. 25, Jan. 1, Jan. 15 and May 28. Any additional hours are floating and must be used by June 30, 2018.
