Hispanic Heritage Month
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater pauses to recognize and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Sept. 15 and ends on Oct. 15. Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence Hispanic Americans have made to history, culture, the arts, and the overall fabric of the country. Originally started in 1968 by Congress as Hispanic Heritage week, it was later expanded to a month in 1988. The celebration begins in the middle rather than the start of September to coincide with national independence days in several Latin American countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica.
The theme for 2020 is “A History of Serving Our Nation.” UW-Whitewater recognizes all of our faculty, staff and students of Hispanic descent and their numerous contributions to our campus community. We celebrate the richness and vast contributions Hispanic Wisconsinites have made and we appreciate of such a rich legacy and standing contribution to our society. As numerous activities will be planned throughout the month, please at advantage of events and activities that further knowledge about Hispanic culture.
