Computer security notifications
Starting May 3, ICIT will institute two new security features seen as computer notifications:
-
Individuals using campus computers will need to accept a new message, called an “Acceptable Use Policy Banner,” before login.
-
While logging into systems that require Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) with Duo, computers will be checked for out-of-date software with updates listed in the Duo prompt.
Acceptable Use Banners
Login banners display a reminder of the policies that govern the authorized use of campus devices and will not measurably impact your daily work. For example, you will accept the message when logging on to your computer, but you will not need to do so after unlocking a computer after inactivity. For more information, see Acceptable Use Policy Banners.
Awareness of the Board of Regents Acceptable Use Policy is essential in using technology resources to accomplish UW-Whitewater’s mission and university-related activities.
Checks for out-of-date software with Duo MFA
Duo MFA will check your device operating system, browsers, Java, and Flash for required updates when accessing MFA-protected systems or applications and show needed updates in the Duo authentication prompt. Individuals will have a grace period to perform updates. The update process differs for campus and personal devices; see Software Update Notifications from MFA with Duo for more information.
-
Campus Devices: Due to the timing of the monthly update schedule, browsers may trigger a Duo warning. For this reason, you may ignore updates under 30 days out-of-date. Individuals with devices not receiving scheduled updates can utilize self-service or contact the Help Desk. ICIT will manage lab and classroom computers, so you may ignore notifications when using these devices.
-
Personal Devices: To update personal devices, follow the directions in the Duo MFA notifications or contact the Help Desk for assistance.
You will have until August 29 to make these updates. After that date, Duo will block the use of any out-of-date systems, apps, or browsers until computers have the necessary updates. These dates were selected to minimize the disruption to instruction and provide instructors with time to address out-of-date software well ahead of the start of the fall semester.
Making sure devices accessing high-risk data are appropriately updated helps us protect university data and the data of all members of our community from being accessed by cybercriminals.
If you require assistance, please feel free to contact the Help Desk. On-demand, self-service resources for using and troubleshooting campus technology are available at helpdesk.uww.edu.
