Grants available, events scheduled on civil discourse and academic freedom
UW-Whitewater is a community of learning where we promote civil discourse that will lead to engagement, understanding, and ongoing commitment toward the sharing of ideas, opinions, and beliefs that may be different from our own.
In keeping with our core value to maintain an intellectually stimulating and respectful environment where everyone can pursue their passions and reach their potential, Academic Affairs has highlighted “civil discourse and belonging” as one of our themes for the 2023-24 Teaching and Learning Grants. Here are some additional opportunities to engage in work that enhances democracy through civil dialogue.
- On Saturday, April 13, Free Speech for Campus and Wisconsin Association of Scholars will be hosting an event at UW-Whitewater on free speech, civil discourse, and the future of academia. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chancellor King will provide welcome remarks and the Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman will give the keynote address. If interested in attending, email the host organization at wischolars@yahoo.com.
- Wisconsin Institute for Citizenship and Civil Dialogue has announced an ongoing grant program for Universities of Wisconsin faculty, staff, and students. A total of $90,000 is budgeted for the spring grant cycle. Applications for projects beginning in summer are considered if submitted by Monday, April 15. https://www.wisconsin.edu/wiccd/wiccd-grant-program/ Submission of applications is done directly through the link on that site, and applicants are encouraged to inform the provost office when applying provostoffice@uww.edu.
- On Friday, April 19, from 10-11:30 a.m., the LEARN Center is offering a hands-on workshop facilitated by UW-Whitewater faculty and staff exploring cases and building on teaching approaches that promote academic freedom in our educational spaces.
